The Selfie
A "selfie" is a colloquial term referring to a self-portrait captured by an individual, primarily using a smartphone's front-facing camera, and subsequently shared on various social media platforms. The integration of front-facing cameras in mobile phones and the surge in the usage of social media platforms such as Instagram have significantly boosted the prevalence of sharing selfies as a means of self-expression through photography. In essence, a selfie is a photo self-captured by someone and usually distributed via social media, typically taken with a smartphone.

Lighting
Lighting can make a huge difference to the look and impact of your portraits.
The hair light
A hair light is a light that separates the hair from the background. This light is placed behind the model and directed towards the hair, creating a halo-like effect. Hair lights are particularly helpful when using the same colour background as the subject's hair, such as black hair on a black background. |
www: I think these photos came out very well and are a good representation of these different types of lightings
ebi: I would have liked to photograph more than one subject to show how the lighting effects the subject in different ways.

The set up
This is what the whole set up looks together with all the lights in place and the Subject standing the correct position for all the lights to have an effect.

Myra Greene: Character Recognition
The photographer Myra Greene creates portrait images of herself using traditional photographic processes. In the project Character Recognition she focusses on different parts of her face as a process of recognition and exploration.

Response from the dark room
www: Im very happy with these photos and especially the responses I made in the darkroom because they really show all the detail captured in the photos and amplify them and make a lot more visible.
ebi: I would have liked to get more photos from home of different family members and focus on other details in there face.

Valerie Kabis
Valerie Kabis is interested in how shapes are created by limiting light. By experimenting with light, shadow and the use of mirrors to change the direction of light with variations in focus, Kabis creates a series of dark and thought provoking images. After obtaining her diploma from EJM, she became a finalist at the Niches Awards and the American Made Show in Washington.

Mirrored images
www: I think my first response the Valerie Kabis was good and I am able to recreate some of her techniques and use them in photos. However Im very proud of my mirrored images because I think they came out much better and show off my skills much more.
ebi: I would have liked to take photos of multiple different subjects to show how different facial features react to Valerie Kabis's style.

Documentary Portrait
George Town - Lewis Khan
"A friend, a neighbour, a familiar face in the street. Georgetown is a view into the life of south London resident, George. During a period of my adolescence that saw playing football in the street as a daily ritual, George and myself often shared the same space. Frequently we would meet with a simple nod, more frequently a hello, and on occasion George would join in for a kick about."

To complete this task I had to walk around school and ask some teachers if I had their permissions to take photos of them. Once I had permission to take photos I wanted to photograph pictures that show the subjects in an element of focus and concentration in what they are doing. However in other photos I wanted to capture their environment that they work around or with during the day.

Big Up Portrait - Ben Watts
Big Up is an large collection of portraits featuring a massive variety of different people. Ben Watts who is a photographer born in London, started this collection in 1990 when he flew to New York from the Sydney College of Arts. Intrigued by New Yorks energy, the book started as a collection of personal snapshots that continued to build over a dozen years. The photographs contain sharpie notes and tape alongside other mixed media that give the images a unique stylised look, including writing from Watts and the subject. Ben made sure to fill each photo as much as possible and therefore resulting with the photos having close to no empty space.
To complete this project I had to gather photos and pieces of writing about Mohammed Ali and then cut them out and and stick them on to a sheet of beige A4 paper. I used different colour post-it notes underneath the cut out to add the affect of layering and add more colour. I then slowly began sticking everything down and used some masking tape to help stick stuff down while also adding more texture to try and get more of a scrapbook look.

Final Project
Myra Greene Developed Project
Myra Greene's project on character recognition aimed to develop a system that could accurately identify and classify written characters (such as letters, numbers, and symbols) in various forms of handwriting. The goal of the project was to create a robust and scalable solution for recognizing handwritten characters that could be applied in real-world applications, such as document processing and signature verification. The project likely involved a combination of computer vision techniques, machine learning algorithms, and data analysis to train the system on large datasets of handwritten characters and improve its recognition accuracy.

I chose Myra Greene for my final piece because I enjoyed recreating her type of photography. In my first response I took photos of my Dad because I felt like his facial features would come out really well once printed in the dark room. I wanted to take pictures of someone with lots a facial features (wrinkles, beard) because in Myra Greenes work what stands out is the features of the subjects face rather than the whole image.

Second Response
For my second response I took photographs of my grandad because he has very similar features to my Dad since they are related. I decided to photograph my grandad for very similar reasons that I wanted to photograph my Dad however since my grandad is much older than my Dad those features where amplified and therefore come out much more defined once they've been printed. I also took pictures of my grandmother because although she also had similar features (wrinkles) the structure of her face was different compared to both my grandad and my Dad and I was intrigued to see how they would come out.

Main Response
www: I am very happy with the outcome and how much the masking tape and the painting with developer effected the appearance of the photograph.
ebi: I would have liked to have found way to have more control about where the developer drops go rather than just having to flick them onto the photographic paper.
